BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s tax commissioner says reported income by all state residents dropped nearly 13 percent in 2017 due to a prolonged slump in agriculture and energy prices. Tax Commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger says the total adjusted gross income for the state slid from $31.2 billion in 2016 to $27.8 billion last year. Data show more than 457,000 people filed state income tax returns last year. That’s down nearly 4,100 from 2016.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A small study suggests that transgender residents face high levels of discrimination while looking for housing in North Dakota. The nonprofit High Plains Fair Housing Council conducted the study in anticipation that lawmakers would consider banning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. Similar proposals have failed in past legislative sessions.
JAMESTOWN, N.D. (AP) – Velva farmer Mark Watne will lead the North Dakota Farmers Union for another year. Watne was re-elected president during the farm group’s annual state convention in Bismarck over the weekend. He’s held the position since 2013. Bob Kuylen of South Heart was re-elected vice president. North Dakota Farmers Union represents about 50,000 family members.
WISHEK, N.D. (AP) – The state Bureau of Criminal Investigation is looking into the death of a man who had been in police custody in south central North Dakota. McIntosh County Chief Deputy Jon Kaatz says Daniel Seminole had a medical emergency while a deputy was transporting him to jail in Bismarck Thursday night. Kaatz wouldn’t say why Seminole was being taken to jail. He says the man died after he’d been flown from the hospital in Wishek to one in Bismarck.
A 25-year-old man died on December 18th in a single-vehicle crash near Aberdeen. The South Dakota Highway Patrol has not yet released the identity the man, who was the only person involved in the crash. According to a news release, the driver was headed south about a mile southeast of Aberdeen when he failed to negotiate an intersection, causing the vehicle to enter a ditch and roll multiple times. The driver was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
